In recent years, intelligent lighting solutions have gained increasing attention from the industry as commercial and industrial demands grow. Enterprise IoT Insights estimates a 70-75 percent reduction in energy consumption through advanced lighting control, indicating that networked lighting control can indeed help meet the sustainability and energy efficiency needs of organizations today.

As a wireless intelligent lighting specialist, Delta Electronics is also following this technological wave to explore ecosystem innovation in IoT lighting systems and broadening application scenarios based on Bluetooth® Mesh, unlocking new possibilities and building an optimal wireless smart buildings ecosystem.

Recently, Lori Lee, Bluetooth SIG marketing director for Asia Pacific and China, and Steven Tsai, senior manager of Delta Electronics, discussed the construction and innovative application of Bluetooth Mesh-based intelligent connected lighting systems.

What are the main applications for your intelligent connected products and solutions designed with Bluetooth Mesh?

Delta Electronics is now committed to building automation, and IoT solutions are certainly one of our priorities. Our Bluetooth® Intelligent Control wireless lighting system utilizes lamps as nodes for information transmission, lighting control, and even advanced features such as data collection, asset location, and remote control.

So, how are these features applied? The current applications include basic lighting management like controlling or setting on mobile phones or apps and switching brightness or color temperature to various scenarios. The advanced use case is asset positioning that uses lamps as location points in buildings. Once attached to a mobile asset, beacons can provide the location and usage of the asset. By using lamps as information transmission nodes, both of the following use cases are enabled:

    • Remote control, enabled by an Internet of Things connection. As our Bluetooth® system is qualified for interconnectivity with other protocols, our luminaire network may be used to control AC and ventilation systems in the building.
    • Data collection, which is an important way to build a human-oriented IoT. As the backbone in the building, lights are pervasive where there are people and thus can capture user behavior and further depict preferences and habits through big data analysis. Our ultimate mission is to deliver natural health and comfort by enabling a space to automatically adjust lighting and temperature to optimal preferences without needing manual remote adjustment.
What are the technological advantages of Bluetooth technology in connected lighting control, and which market pain points are addressed with these advantages?

The Bluetooth® Intelligent Control wireless lighting system can operate independently, creating mesh nodes for connected lighting by combining the latest wireless Bluetooth Mesh technology with the deployment of a lighting fixture. Bluetooth technology allows users to control the lights in a space using an app or wireless switch, supporting easy configuration for a single light or a lighting cluster. Fine-grained, variable adjustment is also enabled from advanced dimming to color temperature adjustment, and desired lighting scenarios can be set based on personal needs and preferences.

Our app also offers a built-in contextual hotkey service, One Key Service (OKS), which stores various lighting scenarios according to a user’s needs. For example, a conference room that offers meeting, briefing, and movie screening modes can feature soft, gradual lighting transitions for each scenario to create a more convenient and comfortable environment.

The Bluetooth Intelligent Control wireless lighting system also helps reduce construction cost and time in signal line installation, supporting easy retrofits during deployment. In addition to all that, we also integrated the circadian rhythm feature in the app for healthy lighting that better aligns with the human biological clock.


Bluetooth Mesh Networking

Bluetooth® Mesh enables the creation of large-scale device networks and is ideally suited for control, monitoring, and automation systems where hundreds, or thousands of devices need to communicate with one another.


In addition to lighting control, what other benefits does a Bluetooth Mesh lighting control system bring to a building?

Connecting everything is the future of smart buildings. By building a backbone network for data transmission within a building with lamps, which is the most densely distributed fixtures in buildings, and leveraging Bluetooth® Mesh to transmit data from different sensors in the space, we not only ensure a secure power supply, but we also save significant construction costs, providing the best connection solution for a smart building. The Bluetooth Intelligent Control wireless lighting system utilizes new Bluetooth Intelligent Control technology to connect data with a Bluetooth wireless transmission, delivering energy conservation, management, security, services, and other advanced features within the building.

The Bluetooth Intelligent Control wireless lighting system is used in zone control for independent autonomous operation and the centralized control system (WEB) connected to the central system. The Bluetooth Intelligent Control wireless lighting system connected system helps enable:

    • Construction of an IoT infrastructure network together with lamp installations for connecting everything through the future wireless IoT
    • Staged purchasing of system services in the future to enable convergence of building systems purchased at different times with open protocols
    • Connectivity to the central building control system for flexibility of small systems and stability of large systems without compromising Bluetooth Intelligent Control zone independence.
Which real-world uses cases does your intelligent lighting system support?

We have actually seen quite a few cases of the Bluetooth® Intelligent Control wireless lighting solution solving complicated problems for a few very well-known customers. Notable successful case studies include:

Tracking Mesh

    • Hospitals: We found that many hospitals are still using very old lighting systems, which have issues in power consumption and management. Switching to our LED lighting system will save 50-70 percent power consumption without laying a single wire, and the intelligent lighting system can be deployed in very few labor hours. More importantly, the asset location management can be built upon individual hospital needs to produce best results with minimal efforts.
    • Nursing Homes: This year, we renovated the lighting system at the Suang-Lien Elderly Center and completed the retrofit in a very short time. Lighting at the nursing home is now bright and comfortable, with interior lighting colors and brightness simultaneously adapting to circadian rhythm.
    • Museums: This year, we worked with the Taipei National Palace Museum on an industry-academia cooperation program with students by delivering highly diversified applications, including exhibition navigation, exhibition guides, and interactive games for its special Curio Cabinets exhibition featured in the museum’s 105 and 107 exhibition rooms.
    • Shopping Malls: Previously, we thought that intelligent connected lighting systems were not suitable for shopping areas due to the high frequency of retrofits and high lamp replacement rate. In other spaces, such as viewing platforms, it was impossible to view the outside night scenery from the interior due to window reflections that result from the sharp difference between indoor and outdoor lighting at night. By using the Bluetooth Intelligent Control solution from Delta Electronics, all the lamps were quickly changed during non-business hours, and a wide range of lighting scenarios were set based on the brightness of different times of the day outdoors and the optimal viewing for guests. The solution finally addressed the problem of poor night views on the viewing platform, which is also a remarkable achievement for us.
What impact do Bluetooth Mesh device network solutions have on the continuous growth of the intelligent control and automation market in the long run?

Bluetooth® Mesh is ideal for automation applications and scenarios such as smart homes, smart lighting, and smart cities.

With low power consumption, decentralized transmission, and ease of scaling mesh networks, Bluetooth® Mesh is ideal for automation applications and scenarios such as smart homes, smart lighting, and smart cities. Thanks to the decentralized wireless standard architecture, Bluetooth Mesh enables many devices to be connected for reliable messaging across control, monitoring, and automation system layouts.

The combination of Bluetooth AoA/AoD technology and Bluetooth Mesh allows for indoor positioning through the Bluetooth Intelligent Control lighting IOT network. Coupled with wearables, it also provides area location, electronic fences, and wearer’s location, helps ensure personal safety, and allows area access and electronic fences to be set on different devices (notifying the manager when out of range).

The wearer’s health and safety can also be managed, such as notifying the system and medical personnel by activating the emergency call button on wearables; actively detecting the wearer’s heart rate, blood pressure, and other body metrics; and automatically alerting the system for immediate help and rescue in times of emergency. In conjunction with AV recognition and intelligent sensors, Bluetooth Mesh can deliver more intelligent home life features for a convenient lifestyle with improved quality of life.

Bluetooth® Networked Lighting Control systems are deployed in offices, retail, healthcare, factories, and other commercial facilities to deliver a combination of energy savings, an enhanced occupant experience, and more efficient building operations.

Bluetooth®︎ Intelligent Controlワイヤレス照明システムは単独で使用でき、最新のワイヤレス技術であるBluetooth Meshを照明器具と組み合わせて展開することで、コネクテッド照明のメッシュノードを形成します。Bluetooth技術がユーザーに可能にするのは、アプリまたはワイヤレススイッチによる空間内の照明制御であり、照明器具単独または照明器具群の設定も容易です。高度な調光から色温度調整まで、きめ細かい無段階調整も可能で、個人のニーズや好みに合わせて照明シナリオを設定することができます。

Bluetooth®︎ Intelligent Controlワイヤレス照明ソリューションが、当社の著名な企業顧客の複雑な問題を実際に解決したケースはいくつもあります。特筆すべき成功事例は、次のようなものです。

  • 病院:多くの病院では今なお非常に古い照明システムを使用しており、電力消費や管理方式に問題が生じています。当社のLED照明システムに切り替えることで、新たな配線を全く加えることなく電力消費を50%~70%削減できます。また、インテリジェンス照明システムの設置工数はごくわずかです。さらに重要な点として、病院のニーズに合わせた資産位置情報管理システムの構築が可能なことにより、最小の労力で最大の効果を生み出せます。
  • 介護施設:当社は今年、台湾の高齢者施設「双連安養センター」 の照明システムを非常に短期間の工事によって更新しました。今や施設の照明は明るく快適になり、概日リズムに合わせ室内の照明の色と明るさが調整されています。
  • 博物館:当社は今年、台北にある国立故宮博物院との産学連携プログラムに学生たちとともに取り組み、展示案内、展示ガイド、博物院の105および107展示室の特別展示「多宝格の収・納・蔵」用のインタラクティブゲームを含む多種多様なアプリケーションを開発しました。

Bluetooth®︎ Meshは、低消費電力で通信は分散化され、メッシュネットワークの規模変更も容易であり、スマートホームやスマート照明、スマートシティといったオートメーションのためのアプリケーションやシナリオに最適です。分散的なワイヤレス標準アーキテクチャのおかげで、Bluetooth®︎ Meshは数多くのデバイスを接続し、制御、監視、オートメーションなどの各種システムレイアウトにわたる信頼性の高いメッセージを送受信することが可能です。

Bluetooth AoA/AoD技術とBluetooth Meshを組み合わせれば、Bluetooth Intelligent Control照明のIoTネットワークを屋内測位にも活用できます。ウェアラブルと組み合わせれば、エリア測位、電子フェンス、装着者の位置情報を提供して個人の安全確認に活用できるほか、エリアアクセスや別のデバイスでの電子フェンスの設定も可能です(対象範囲を出た場合に管理者に通知)。

また、装着者の安全衛生管理も可能です。例えば、ウェラブルの緊急通報ボタン起動によるシステム担当者や医療スタッフへの通知や、装着者の心拍数や血圧をはじめとする身体測定値の能動的検知、システムへの緊急時自動通報による即時の救援・救出要請などが考えられます。Bluetooth Meshは、AV認識とインテリジェントセンサーとを組み合わせることにより、生活の利便性と質の向上に役立つさらにインテリジェントなスマートホーム機能を実現できます。
