From innovation in automobiles and home entertainment to new achievements in security and robotics, there’s no shortage of amazing tech to take in at CES 2024. If you had a chance to attend, you were no doubt introduced to some incredible advancements. However, you might have missed the best CES experience – a comprehensive tour of the latest Bluetooth® audio innovation.

2302 Auracast Experience Long Color

Set up in the Las Vegas Convention Center, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), in collaboration with several member companies like Qualcomm, Intel, Telelink, Airoha, Nordic Semiconductor, and more, hosted the North American debut of The Auracast™ Experience at CES. The Auracast™ Experience is a global event series designed to give media, analysts, and industry enthusiasts an exclusive, hands-on look at Auracast™ broadcast audio.

Auracast™ broadcast audio is a new Bluetooth capability that enables an audio transmitter to broadcast audio to an unlimited number of receivers. A transmitter can be a smartphone, laptop, TV, or even a public address or sound system, and receivers are headphones, speakers, earbuds, or even hearing aids. Auracast™ broadcast audio will enable exciting new audio experiences that will enhance the way we engage with each other and the world around us.

Auracast™ Broadcast Audio at CES

Attendees at The Auracast™ Experience had the opportunity to personally experience this new broadcasting capability firsthand. In addition to getting an exclusive look at a product showcase featuring Auracast™ enabled smartphones, speakers, hearing aids, earbuds, streamers, public transmitters, and other end products from major manufacturers, visitors took part in several simulated Auracast™ scenarios: arriving at an airport to travel to an international conference, navigating the airport terminal, and listening to keynote speeches at a public venue.

Participants were provided with Auracast™ compatible earbuds and a smartphone with an Auracast™ app for scanning, receiving, and playing Auracast™ broadcasts (soon, bring-your-own-device usage will be increasingly accessible as more devices become compatible with Auracast™ broadcast audio).

Even though the smartphone and earbuds are paired, the smartphone is not the audio source. The audio source, the Auracast™ transmitter, is separate, and participants were able to select and receive various Auracast™ broadcasts through the app, similar to choosing from available Wi-Fi networks.


Auracast™ Broadcast Audio in an Airport Bar

The event began with a hands-on experience. Participants visited an area designed to resemble the sports bar of an airport. In such bars, it is common for multiple muted TV monitors to show various sports at once, but customers are often unable to hear the commentary. 

For this demonstration, the TVs were equipped with GN ReSound TV streamers (now available) which allowed them to deliver audio as Auracast™ transmitters. Attendees were able to use the Auracast™ app on their smartphones to select the TV of their choice and listen via their Auracast™ compatible earbuds, then switch to the audio of another TV by selecting a new broadcast, without a moment’s delay.

And this experience is not limited to sports bars. Silent TVs in hospital waiting rooms, in gymnasiums, on trains, and more are all ideal spaces where Auracast™ broadcast audio can enhance the watching experience.

Auracast™ Broadcast Audio at the Airport Gate


Next, attendees got a chance to see how Auracast™ broadcast audio can be used to share audio with friends and family. While waiting in the airport lounge, a colleague asked them to join in watching a movie together on their laptop. Participants were also invited to listen to music via another colleague’s smartphone. Invitations were simultaneously received via the Auracast™ app. Visitors scanned the available Auracast™ broadcasts and selected the one they wanted to hear. This allowed the audio being shared by colleagues to stream directly into their earbuds.

During these personal audio-sharing scenarios, only those with the necessary passwords were able to participate, ensuring privacy while allowing more people to enjoy the same audio at once, each on their individual pairs of earbuds.

Additionally, using the Auracast™ app on your smartphone to scan and receive Auracast™ broadcasts related to your boarding gate lets you receive important information being shared over the public address system directly into your headphones. Even while enjoying movies or music, if the airport’s announcement system is Auracast™ compatible, you can opt to receive those announcements directly and never again worry about missing important flight information.

Lastly, attendees arrived at the lecture hall for the conference. In this simulated scenario, participants show up a few minutes late and can only find seating at the back of the auditorium where, often, it can be difficult to hear the presenter. However, since this auditorium is set up to support Auracast™ broadcast audio, attendees were able to listen at the optimal volume to suit their needs via the highest audio quality available on their own earbuds, no matter where in the auditorium they were seated. And, since multi-lingual options were offered by the venue, participants could choose between hearing the lecture in English or Mandarin.


Lastly, at this point in the tour, attendees had the opportunity to hear the audio from their guide’s microphone in their Auracast™ earbuds. Watching the tour guide speak while hearing that person’s voice via the earbuds, participants heard no perceptible lag or audio delay. Extremely low latency, like what visitors experienced, is the only way to avoid an echo effect or lip-sync problems. This is critical for people with hearing loss – especially if they have partial hearing loss or hearing loss in only one ear. 

Auracast™ broadcast audio also includes further support for hearing aids and, combined with traditional hearing assistance measures, the result is a vast improvement in audio accessibility for all. This is particularly important as populations age, increasing the number of individuals experiencing hearing loss.

The Future Is Auracast™ Broadcast Audio

A year ago, the specifications were available, but discussion regarding the potential for Auracast™ broadcast audio was largely conceptual. Now, CES 2024 represents a significant milestone in Auracast™ adoption. Not only are we seeing live demonstrations of this technology in action, but enabling technology (silicon, modules, etc.) is now readily available, and product and solution vendors have started to bring end products to market – including retrofit products that will help speed adoption.

Auracast™ ブロードキャスト オーディオ、CESに登場

Auracast™ Experienceの参加者は、この新しいブロードキャスト機能を実際に体験できます。参加者は、Auracast™対応スマートフォン、スピーカー、補聴器、イヤホン、ストリーマー、公共放送設備やその他の大手メーカー製品の特別展示が見られることに加え、「国際カンファレンスに出席するため空港に到着して空港ターミナル内を移動し、カンファレンスが行われる公共の会場で基調講演を聴く」というAuracast™の活用シナリオに沿ったシミュレーションを体験できました。

参加者には、Auracast™対応イヤホンと、Auracast™配信をスキャン・受信・再生するためのAuracast™アプリの入ったスマートフォンが配られました(間もなく、さらに多くの機器がAuracast™ ブロードキャスト オーディオ対応になるにつれ、各自が持参した機器での利用がより容易になります)。

このデモンストレーションでは、「GN ReSound TV Streamer」(現在発売中)を装備したテレビが、Auracast™送信機として音声を配信していました。参加者は手元にあるスマートフォンのAuracast™アプリを使用して視聴したいテレビを選び、Auracast™対応イヤホンで音声を聴くことができました。別のテレビの音声を聴きたい場合、その配信を選択するだけで、わずかな遅れもなく音声を切り替えることができました。

このような利用はスポーツバーに限られるものではありません。Auracast™ ブロードキャスト オーディオは、病院の待合室、室内競技場、電車内など無音テレビのある数多くの場所で、より充実した視聴体験を実現できます。


空港ゲートでAuracast™ ブロードキャスト オーディオ

続いて参加者は、Auracast™ ブロードキャスト オーディオを使った家族・友人とのオーディオ共有方法を体験しました。空港ラウンジでの待ち時間に、同僚がノートパソコンで一緒に映画を観ようと誘ってくれます。また別の同僚からは、スマートフォンの音楽を一緒に聴こうという誘いも届きます。それらの招待は、Auracast™アプリを通じて同時に届きました。参加者は受信できるAuracast™の配信をスキャンして探し、聴きたいものを選びます。選択すると、同僚が共有してくれたオーディオが、直接自分のイヤホンにストリーミングされました。

最後に参加者が訪れたのは、国際カンファレンスの基調講演会場となるホールでした。この場面に用意されたシナリオでは、参加者は講演開始から数分遅れで会場に到着します。空いていたのは後方の、講演者の話を聞き取りにくい席でした。幸いホールはAuracast™ ブロードキャスト オーディオに対応していたため、参加者はホール内の座席の位置に関係なく、自分のイヤホンで得られる最高の音質で、自身が必要とする最適な音量に調節して講演を聴くことができました。会場では多言語サービスも提供されていたため、講演の言語を英語と中国語から選べました。


Auracast™ ブロードキャスト オーディオは補聴器対応も備えています。従来の聴覚補助システムと組み合わせることで、あらゆる人の聞こえを大きく改善することにつながります。高齢化社会が進み、難聴者人口が増えていくと考えられるなか、この重要性は計り知れません。

未来はAuracast™ ブロードキャスト オーディオに

仕様はすでに1年前に公開されたものの、Auracast™ ブロードキャスト オーディオの可能性に関する議論は、おおむね概念的なものにとどまっていました。今回のCES 2024は、Auracast™普及への重要なマイルストーンとなりました。この技術が活用される場面の実演が見られただけでなく、それを実現するための技術(シリコン、モジュールなど)が容易に入手可能になり、製品・ソリューションのベンダーが最終製品を市場に送り出し始めています。中には後付けできる製品もあり、普及をさらに加速させるでしょう。
