Specification Development Policy Updates

On 17 May 2019, the Specification Management Process Document (SMPD) version 27 was approved and made effective by the Bluetooth SIG Board of Directors.

As part of the updates to the specification development process, the Board will no longer adopt 0.9/CR drafts as Prototyping Specifications. Instead, the Board will now approve 0.9/CR specifications and the start of IOP testing for each.

In addition, updates were made to member notifications. An IP Review notice and a Voting Draft Review notice prior to both PS adoption and final adoption will no longer be sent to members. Instead, members will now receive a Member Review notice shortly after Board approval of an 0.9/CR specification. An adoption meeting notice will be sent 14 days prior to final adoption.

The SIG will provide further guidance of SMPD policy updates and SMPD v26-v27 transition information in early June.

For more details, see SMPD v27.

Group Leadership Policy Updates

On 14 May 2019, a  process revision for fulfilling vacancies in group leadership positions that arise outside the annual leadership renewal process was approved by the Bluetooth SIG Board of Directors.

For group Vice-Chair vacancies, the group nomination and voting process will no longer be conducted. Rather, the Chair of a group with a Vice-Chair vacancy may identify willing Vice-Chair candidates and propose such candidates to the Board directly for consideration, after informing the Group. Following receipt of such a Vice-Chair recommendation, the Board will consider and, if applicable, appoint that candidate to serve as a Vice-Chair in accordance with the terms of the Bylaws.

SIG staff will coordinate with any groups with vacant Vice-Chair positions and discuss next steps for Board appointment of any candidates that have already submitted self-nominations.

Note: For group Chair vacancies, groups and Bluetooth SIG staff will continue to follow the process set out in the Working Group Process Document and the Leadership Policies Document.
