Description:
In January 2019, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (Bluetooth SIG)—the trade association that oversees the development of Bluetooth® standards and the licensing of the Bluetooth technologies and trademarks—announced a new direction finding feature as part of version 5.1 of the Bluetooth Core Specification. By including this new feature, the RSSI-based proximity location enabled by Bluetooth via “beacons” is taken to the next level by opening up for enabling angular estimation over Bluetooth technology.

The AoA (Angle-of-Arrival) and AoD (Angle-of-Departure) methods allow for measuring the angular directions of Bluetooth LE radio signals, and therefore compute the location with an accuracy down to 10 cm and latency down to a fraction of a second. While the AoA perfectly fits with a network-centric system architecture which is optimal for asset-tracking, the AoD is a revolutionary methodology that is optimal for addressing mobile- and consumer-centric use-cases.

In this presentation we will introduce and describe the key features of these new AoA and AoD methods, in particular focusing on how they could be exploited in the context of smart building, domotics, access control, well-being, wayfinding, and several other Location Based Services (LBS). Real-world examples of existing implementations will be showcased and discussed.

Lighting: the foundation of a Smart Building

Description:
When we think of a building’s foundation, we think of the ground below us. The slab of concrete supporting the walls, the floors and ceiling; ultimately supporting everything inside of the building. The foundation supports the entire infrastructure of the building creating an environment of safety and security for the building’s occupants, assets, systems and utilities.

However, the foundation in a traditional sense is not what makes a building smart. A Smart Building takes the building described above and adds the means to collect data, analyze the data and ultimately adapt the environment. The foundation needed to support a Smart Building cannot be found in a concrete slab but instead in a network of interconnected devices and apps to add the intelligence to the building.

What is the best way to build this foundation for Smart Buildings? Pragmatically, the answer lies in one of a building’s system that has existed in most buildings for over a century: Lighting. In this presentation, we’ll explore how the lighting system in a building can easily provide the hardware to create the foundation and how Bluetooth can provide the technology to connect other systems, and finally how to pull everything together.
