Earlier this year, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), in collaboration with several Bluetooth® member companies, hosted The Auracast™ Experience at Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2023. This global event series provides attendees with an in-depth look into what it will be like to experience Auracast™ broadcast audio in the real world.
The Auracast™ Experience at Mobile World Congress
The Auracast™ Experience is an exclusive demonstration of some of the new audio use cases Auracast™ broadcast audio will enable. “Imagine a future where you can tap into any audio around you, for example, in a bar, at the airport gate, or when at home and you want to listen to your TV all to yourself or share a movie on a flight wirelessly over Bluetooth®? It’s pretty awesome,” said Tomi from GadgetsBoy. “I’ll even go as far as to saying it was my fav tech out of MWC this year.”
Each person was provided with a pair of Auracast™ enabled earbuds and a smartphone with an Auracast™ app that allowed them to scan for, join, and listen to the Auracast™ broadcasts in three sample public environments: an auditorium, a sports bar, and an airport terminal.
Feedback for Auracast™ broadcast audio after the event was overwhelmingly positive. There was a lot of excitement about the experience and the capability of the technology. “Auracast™ broadcast audio was an MWC highlight for me – the use case demonstrations were clear and compelling,” said Simon Bryant from CCS Insight. “Auracast™ broadcast audio has the potential to be a game changer in terms of hearables use cases across large and important vertical applications such as professional audio vertical environments, including PA systems, live audio, and events but also hearing health management and quite a bit more.”

The Auracast™ Experience Goes Global
Now, the Bluetooth SIG, supported by members from the Bluetooth® community, is taking The Auracast™ Experience on the road, and the next stop is Computex Taipei. Attendees at this event will have the same opportunity to experience Auracast™ broadcast audio in simulated locations that they will soon find it in the real world.
Recreating realistic use case scenarios gives a better understanding of the benefits Auracast™ broadcast audio can provide. “Seeing the shared audio experiences first-hand, unmuting silent TVs in public places, and sharing audio brought the Auracast™ concept from being something of the future to being available now,” said Chris Havell from Qualcomm. “It has the potential to truly enhance so many people’s lives through audio broadcasting.”
Nordic Semiconductor helped provide Auracast™ transmitters for The Auracast™ Experience at MWC and will collaborate with the Bluetooth SIG once again to help bring The Auracast™ Experience to Computex. “What I enjoyed the most personally was the live audio experience,” said Eirik Midttun from Nordic Semiconductor. “The audio latency was almost imperceivable, and the setup was done in a very simple way that makes Auracast™ broadcast audio a solution that will be easy to deploy.”
“Once they experience Auracast™ broadcast audio, I think people will realize just how much they will reap the benefits of the technology.”
– Chris Havell, Qualcomm
This next generation of audio innovation will propel audio streaming forward, letting you hear your best, unmute your world, share your audio, and enhance the way you engage with the world around you. Soon, at Computex Taipei, attendees will have another opportunity to see how the Bluetooth® member community is turning that promise into a reality.
“Once they experience Auracast™ broadcast audio, I think people will realize just how much they will reap the benefits of the technology,” said Havell. “A lot of people don’t realize how much they struggle in their daily lives with hearing loss or what they miss when watching silent TVs in public places. Once they know how easy it is to make use of Auracast™ broadcast audio, they will view this as something that can enhance their lives in many different ways.”
