The Contact Theatre, located in Manchester, is a pioneering hub for young creatives. As Manchester’s Young People’s Theatre, it fosters talent across performance, crew, and production roles, actively building career pathways within the arts. The theatre’s community-driven approach ensures emerging artists find space to grow while the venue evolves to meet modern accessibility standards.

The problem statement

Prior to its rebuild in 2021, the Contact Theatre experienced low audience engagement, particularly due to limited assistive listening capabilities. While induction loops and occasional audio descriptions were available, they lacked the reach and impact needed to fully accommodate people with hearing loss. A robust solution was needed to improve inclusivity and ensure all patrons could fully experience performances.

The Auracast™ solution

Deployment

With support from the Ewing Foundation and installation expertise from Ampetronic’s Sam Burkinshaw, the Contact Theatre deployed the Auri TX2N system (a commercial Auracast™ broadcast audio transmitter) complete with four RX1 receivers and a base station. The installation proved seamless, and this new Auracast™ broadcast solution now serves as the theatre’s primary assistive listening system. Now, the technical team can tailor audio broadcasts based on performance needs, allowing for dynamic, high-fidelity sound delivery.

Benefits

The transformation has been remarkable. Audience members immediately responded with greater engagement, appreciating the clarity and accessibility Auracast™ broadcast audio offers. “British Sign Language interpreters praised the system’s quality, highlighting how improved sound detail helps them interpret dialogue with greater accuracy,” said Adam Steed, production manager at the Contact Theatre. The technology’s portability has also enabled use in off-site performances, making it a versatile asset.

Technicians appreciate having greater control over broadcasts, ensuring that the audio is tailored and professional. “By facilitating clear and accessible sound, Auracast™ broadcast audio has elevated the overall theatrical experience for staff and patrons,” said Steed.

A look ahead

One of the world’s first theatres to deploy Auracast™ broadcast audio, the Contact Theatre continues to lead by example. The organization regularly collaborates with audiologists and industry professionals through showcases, demo sessions, and video content produced in partnership with GN and Ampetronic. Their proactive outreach not only highlights the technical excellence of Auracast™ broadcast audio but also promotes a broader conversation about accessibility in performing arts. The theatre’s commitment to innovation and inclusion suggests a promising future — one where modern technology and artistic passion blend seamlessly to help create a more connected world.
