Since 1925, the Goodman Theatre has been a cornerstone of artistic expression and community engagement in Chicago, serving as both a theatrical home for artists and a gathering place where powerful stories come to life. Welcoming a diverse audience of theatre‑goers, the venue continually seeks ways to ensure that every patron can fully experience its productions, regardless of physical or technical barriers.

The problem statement

Like many historic theatres, the Goodman faced accessibility challenges tied to an aging infrastructure. Its existing assistive listening solution relied on an outdated FM system that no longer met modern expectations for usability or performance. While functional, the system created friction for patrons and staff, requiring extra support and offering a less intuitive experience for users. As accessibility expectations evolved, the theatre recognized the need to modernize its approach, particularly for patrons with hearing loss, without increasing operational complexity.

The Auracast™ solution

Deployment

The conversation around improvement began when a patron introduced the concept of Auracast™ broadcast audio to the venue. Around the same time, Thunder Hearing & Sound, the theatre’s assistive listening system integrator, helped assess how an Auracast™ solution could fit into the Goodman’s broader accessibility strategy.

Rather than replacing existing infrastructure outright, the theatre chose to deploy Listen Technologies Auri™ Auracast™ system as an overlay to its hearing loop in the Albert Theatre. This approach allowed The Goodman to expand listening options while maintaining familiar solutions for long‑time users.

The deployment exceeded expectations, particularly in audio performance. Sound fidelity and extremely low latency stood out, delivering a listening experience comparable to, or better than, traditional systems while seamlessly integrating with modern, Bluetooth® enabled personal devices.

Benefits

The impact of Auracast™ broadcast audio was immediate and tangible. From a staff perspective, the system supports a streamlined workflow by reducing the need to manage and distribute dedicated assistive listening devices. For patrons, the benefits are even more profound.

“One audience member who had previously struggled to use their telecoil with the hearing loop reported being blown away by Auracast™ broadcast audio after trying it for the first time,” said Megan Thunder, Operations/Sales, Thunder Hearing & Sound, LLC. “Their experience was so positive that they began actively seeking out other venues offering Auracast™ support.”

Feedback from patrons and staff has been consistently enthusiastic, highlighting exceptional sound quality and ease of use. By offering multiple assistive listening options concurrently, the Goodman now provides one of the widest accessibility choices available in a theatrical setting.

A look ahead

For the Goodman Theatre, Auracast™ broadcast audio represents a meaningful step toward future‑ready accessibility. By embracing emerging technology today, the theatre reinforces its long‑standing commitment to inclusion, innovation, and enhanced audience experiences. As more personal devices continue to support Auracast™ broadcast audio, the value of this investment will only grow.
