Stadium Taranaki, located in New Plymouth, New Zealand, is a premier outdoor venue with a seating capacity of 21,000 and serves as a hub for sports, entertainment, and community gatherings. Beyond the field, the venue offers versatile spaces for meetings, expos, dinners, and conferences. Rooted in inclusivity and accessibility, the stadium aims to create a welcoming environment for all patrons, whether they are attending a rugby match or a corporate event. The recent completion of the East Stand in April has further expanded its capabilities, attracting increased bookings for its lounge and meeting spaces.

The problem statement

Despite its modern facilities and community focus, Stadium Taranaki faced a significant challenge: ensuring a fully inclusive experience for all visitors, particularly those with hearing loss. The absence of an assistive listening system (ALS) meant that some patrons were not able to fully engage with the events and activities hosted at the venue. This gap in accessibility was at odds with the stadium’s mission to be welcoming and inclusive, prompting the need for a solution that could enhance the audio experience for everyone.

The Auracast™ solution

Deployment

Recently, a contractor, Datatalk, proposed Auracast™ broadcast audio as a value-engineered solution. After discussions with the supplier, the team recognized that Auracast™ broadcast audio offered a cost-effective, high-performance alternative to traditional induction hearing loops. The chosen solution, the Ampetronic Auri TX2N-D, provided broader coverage and simple installation. Unlike induction loops, which are expensive and limited in range, the Auracast™ deployment only required data cabling and the strategic placement of wireless access points around the site. The system was seamlessly integrated into the stadium’s PA system and speakers, particularly in the newly built East Stand.

Benefits

Early testing and internal feedback suggest that Auracast™ broadcast audio will significantly enhance the stadium’s accessibility. Installation was straightforward, and the technology promises to deliver a premium audio experience to all patrons, including those using assistive listening devices. The deployment also aligns with the stadium’s broader goals of inclusivity and community engagement. By registering the location on the Bluetooth SIG’s Auracast™ map and Google Maps, the team is actively working to raise awareness and ensure that the community knows this resource is available.

A look ahead

As Stadium Taranaki prepares to host future events, the team is eager to see Auracast™ broadcast audio in action. The initial setup and testing have been promising, and the stadium is currently focused on educating the public about the new system and encouraging its use.

Looking forward, the team believes Auracast™ broadcast audio will become a vital part of the venue’s infrastructure, enhancing the experience for all visitors and setting a new standard for accessibility in public venues.
