The Regent Theatre stands as a cultural landmark in Dunedin, New Zealand, occupying a prime spot in the city’s central Octagon reserve. Since opening in 1928 as a grand picture palace, the venue has evolved into a vibrant hub for an eclectic mix of live theatre, music, opera, dance, film festivals, conferences, and more. With seating for 1,617 patrons and state-of-the-art technical facilities, the Regent Theatre continues to deliver world-class experiences while preserving its rich heritage.
The problem statement
Accessibility is a core value for the Regent Theatre, and its aging hearing loop system was nearing the end of its lifecycle. The limitations of the old system made it difficult to provide advanced features such as audio-descriptive performances. As audience expectations and industry standards evolve, the theatre needed a modern, scalable assistive listening solution. The goal was to enhance inclusivity and ensure the venue remained future ready for patrons with diverse accessibility needs.
The Auracast™ solution
Deployment
The decision to adopt Auracast™ broadcast audio was influenced by its flexibility, reliability, and alignment with emerging technology standards. Auracast™ broadcast audio is rapidly becoming the benchmark for assistive listening systems. “We needed something that would be reliable for years to come,” said Ben Caton, Regent Theatre’s assistant technical manager. “With Auracast™ broadcast audio becoming standard in all new hearing aids, smartphones, headphones, and more, the theatre must support Auracast™ capabilities.”
After discovering the solution at the ETNZ Connect 2025 Conference, the Regent Theatre selected an initial setup comprising one Auri-TX2N transmitter and four Auri-RX1 receivers, with the ability to expand as demand grows. Although installation is still pending, early configuration through the Auri Manager has proven intuitive and efficient, setting the stage for a smooth rollout.

Benefits
Auracast™ broadcast audio offers significant advantages over traditional hearing loop systems. Its user-friendly design and near-infinite scalability make it ideal for venues like the Regent Theatre, where flexibility is key. The system will support two broadcast channels — one for assistive listening and another for audio-descriptive performances — enhancing accessibility for a broader audience. By adopting an Auracast™ solution, the theatre is investing in a system that will remain relevant for years, ensuring compatibility with next-generation devices and improving the overall customer experience.
A look ahead
The Regent Theatre’s Auracast™ deployment reflects a commitment to innovation and inclusivity. While audience testing is yet to occur, expectations are high for improved accessibility and engagement. As the system becomes operational, feedback from patrons will guide future expansions, reinforcing the theatre’s role as a leader in accessible entertainment.
For venues considering similar upgrades, embracing Auracast™ broadcast audio is a forward-thinking move that benefits both audiences and operators. “Accessibility should be a priority for every venue, and Auracast™ broadcast audio is the way forward,” said Caton.
