Jyväskylän Vapaaseurakunta, the Evangelical Free Church of Jyväskylä, has been a cornerstone of the community since its founding in 1892. The church belongs to the Evangelical Free Church of Finland and operates from a modern venue designed to accommodate worship services, community events, and outreach programs.
Today, the church serves more than 1,000 members from around 20 different nationalities. This diversity is a source of strength and joy for the congregation.
The problem statement
Ensuring everyone can fully participate in services has always been a priority. However, the church faced challenges in delivering clear audio to all attendees. People with hearing aids, those working in the kitchen during services, and visitors unfamiliar with the Finnish language often struggled to hear. While an induction loop system was in place for hearing aid users, it suffered interference from ventilation motors and lighting. Additionally, the existing translation system relied on aging equipment, and there was no effective solution for those without hearing aids but needing audio support.
The Auracast™ solution
Deployment
Steven Kelly, who oversees the tech teams, had long monitored advancements in audio broadcasting. When he discovered Auracast™ broadcast audio as a promising technology, the church saw an opportunity to modernize its approach. The team selected Avantree’s Audikast 4 transmitter with an external antenna for broad coverage and paired it with Philips TAS2000 portable speakers — both consumer-grade products that demonstrated compatibility and affordability. “Installation was remarkably quick, requiring minimal training,” said Kelly. “The first test confirmed strong signal performance across multiple rooms, validating the benefits of global standards.”

Benefits
The immediate impact was felt in the kitchen, where staff previously relied on cumbersome monitors and long cables. The Auracast™ solution eliminated the need for heavy equipment and complex setups, saving time and effort each week. The system also opened new possibilities for assistive listening, allowing users to choose their preferred language or audio feed from anywhere in the building. “The transition was seamless, which speaks to the intuitive nature of the technology,” said Kelly.
A look ahead
The church plans to continue offering both the induction loop and the Auracast™ solution, with potential expansions for translation services and personal headphone use. As students increasingly prefer using their own devices, the flexibility of Auracast ™ broadcast audio will be key. Future upgrades may include additional transmitters and broader integration with mobile platforms.
For Jyväskylän Vapaaseurakunta, this deployment marks a significant step toward inclusivity and innovation, ensuring that every voice and every listener can share in the experience.
