The problem statement
Before deploying Auracast™ broadcast audio, Camera Zwo did not offer an assistive listening system to support guests with hearing loss. Despite years of searching, the cinema was unable to identify a solution that was both cost-effective and easy for customers to use.
Existing systems on the market failed to meet these dual requirements, leaving a significant accessibility gap. This limitation not only affected visitors with hearing loss but also others who struggled to follow dialogue — particularly in films presented in their original language or with on-set audio recording — reducing overall comfort and enjoyment during screenings.
The Auracast™ solution
Deployment
The opportunity to address this challenge emerged when a local hearing aid specialist introduced the cinema to Auracast™ broadcast audio. Recognizing its potential, Camera Zwo partnered with the specialist to explore implementation. The cinema ultimately selected AuraGate by Opus, installing one in each of its five screening rooms.
This Auracast™ solution stood out due to its relatively low cost, straightforward installation, and intuitive user experience. Importantly, it allows audio to be broadcast directly to compatible hearing aids, headphones, or earbuds. The system was implemented as an overlay to the existing cinema audio, offering an additional, optional listening experience without disrupting standard operations.
Benefits
Early feedback has been highly encouraging. During the testing phase, guests were invited to experience the system using vouchers distributed through the hearing aid specialist. One user reported that it was the first time in years she could watch a film without needing assistance understanding dialogue — an outcome that underscores the system’s impact.
Many testers returned for additional visits, even without incentives, highlighting the value they placed on the improved experience. Beyond accessibility, Auracast™ broadcast audio also enhances comfort for a wider audience, including those who prefer personalized audio or need clearer dialogue. The system’s strong signal range also simplified deployment, as the devices could be installed outside the screening rooms while still providing reliable coverage.
A look ahead
Camera Zwo plans to formally introduce Auracast™ broadcast audio to the broader public through a dedicated event, where guests can test the system, explore compatible devices, and learn more about its benefits. Looking forward, the cinema anticipates that this new capability will attract a broader audience, including individuals who may have stopped attending due to hearing difficulties.
By lowering barriers to access and improving the overall listening experience, Auracast™ broadcast audio has the potential to re-engage former patrons while enhancing satisfaction for current ones. Based on early results, the cinema strongly recommends that other venues consider piloting the technology.
