The Imagine Blue Awards highlights the work and imaginations of creators, developers, designers, and students using Bluetooth® technology to push the boundaries of wireless connectivity and solve the world’s biggest challenges. 

Applicants to the Imagine Blue Awards were able to enter in two categories—Prototype and Student—with the chance to win cash prizes ranging from $5,000 to $10,000 USD to help take their inventions to market. Bluetooth SIG received hundreds of applications and narrowed down to five finalists in each category. All Prototype finalists showcased their entry at Bluetooth World where they presented their submission to the Imagine Blue judging panel – which included Mark Powell of the Bluetooth SIG, Stacey Higginbotham of Stacey Knows Things IoT Review, and Stuart Carlaw, Andrew Zignani, and Ryan Martin of ABI Research. The winner was selected based on the submission’s level of innovation, market potential, and overall impact the entry could have on the IoT industry. Congratulations to both the 2017 Prototype and Student winners and to all of this year's finalists.

cassia award2017 Prototype Winner:

Cassia Networks - The Telehealth Solution connects the Cassia Bluetooth router with smart medical equipment to create a more effective and automated IoT telehealth solution for at-home care. The Cassia Bluetooth router collects vital signs and other data from a Bluetooth medical device connected to the Cassia router and securely forwards it to a service provider’s cloud server. This enables remote patient monitoring in real-time, reducing costs to both patients and providers, while improving patient compliance and overall patient care. 

2017 Student Winner: 

Sara DuSara Du, Bluejay – Bluejay is a mobile application to assist rescue workers in locating and communicating with victims after a natural disaster.  Bluejay uses Bluetooth to connect to an Intel Edison module attached to a drone, and is intended for emergency responders to deploy in search and rescue operations. By harnessing the versatility of Bluetooth communication and the maneuverability of drones, more lives can be saved during a disaster. Communication is key to success in these types of situations, and Bluejay’s ability to maintain reliable connections between responders and those affected by disaster makes it a valuable Bluetooth implementation.

Prototype Finalists:

Beeem – Enables Bluetooth beacons to broadcast cloud-connected, fully functioning webpages for users to access more information and purchasing capabilities for any object, place, or event. This technology gives businesses the ability to boost customer engagement without apps, QR codes, or texting. 

Novalia – Brings touch-based interactive consumer digital experiences to virtually any printed material, which are capable of Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone beacon communication. This interactive, touchable print becomes a beacon when touched, and can come in the form of consumer materials such as posters and packaging.
Tempow – Uses local multi-casting capabilities to connect one smartphone to several Bluetooth audio devices for one synced output. This allows users to access the same signal with multiple Bluetooth speakers or headphones for a simplified connected listening experience at home, with a group, or on the go.

– Creates a virtual floor plan of users’ homes and helps track frequently misplaced items with its product, Atlas, which is a small, plug-in Bluetooth proximity device. It can identify any nearby device equipped with a Bluetooth tracker and estimate its distance from the Atlas device, pinpointing which room the missing item is located in.

Student Finalists:

ArriveAwake-ArriveAlive – Connects a heart rate monitor to a mobile device via Bluetooth to analyze users’ heart rate data while driving and prevent drowsy driving accidents. This patented system alerts the driver when it detects impending drowsiness, and uses an audible system to interact with the driver and keep them awake until they can safely pull off the road.
DeMeter – Connects a comprehensive package of Bluetooth environmental sensors to an online community to create a crowd-sourced picture of local environments. Using this software, concrete information on surrounding environmental conditions is made accessible to the public, especially benefiting sustainable farmers and gardeners.

Magic Knock – Enables users to operate smart home appliances and devices by knocking on a wall or desk and by turning any surfaces into a touch panel. Not only does this solution eliminate the need for manually using remotes and switches, it can also particularly contribute to the independence of users with mobility impairments.
OperaBLE – Provides in-depth tracking of workers in order to enhance the value chain of Industrial Internet of Things products by monitoring location, activity, and even emotion via a Bluetooth wearable. OperaBLE provides industrial industries with valuable information on working conditions, production rates, and employee performance.
