本記事はワイヤレス接続の選択肢に関するシリーズ記事の第一部になります。

IoT分野のワイヤレス接続において、開発者が選択できるソリューションは多岐にわたります。ですが、どの用途にも適した万能なソリューションは存在せず、開発者の目的や用途に適したソリューションを選択することが重要です。接続ソリューションの選択は、プロジェクトのニーズや要件に基づいて行う必要があります。

プロジェクトの要件は、当然ながら用途ごとに異なります。この記事では、商工業分野で特に多いIoTの用途に注目し、シリーズ記事全体で用いる用語を定義します。さらに用途に適したワイヤレス技術を選択するにあたってとりわけ重要な要素について概説し、特に広く用いられているワイヤレス接続ソリューションをご紹介します。

用途

商工業分野では、特に以下のユースケースでワイヤレス接続が多く用いられています。

 

センサーネットワークを用いた状態監視:工場における機械類の状態を監視するシステム等。

 
 

制御とオートメーションシステム:商用照明、セキュリティシステム、ビデオカメラ等。

 
 

資産追跡:病院内における医療機器の位置情報の追跡等。

 

用語

実際にIoTシステムの要素をご紹介する前に、まず本シリーズ記事における用語を定義します。

  • IoT(モノのインターネット):IoTは混乱を招きやすい用語で、巷には多くの定義が溢れています。ときには相反する定義を目にされた方もいらっしゃるかもしれません。このシリーズ記事では、分かりやすさを重視してIoTを「1つ以上のワイヤレスネットワークを介したデバイス同士の通信機能」と定義します。
  • デバイス:このシリーズ記事では、ネットワークの他のピアとワイヤレス通信を行う機能を有する電子機器を指します。例えばスマートフォンやコネクテッド照明の器具、コネクテッドセンサー、ドアロック、スマートウォッチ等がデバイスにあたります。
  • ゲートウェイ:2つ以上の(通常は相互通信できない)ネットワークをブリッジ接続するための装置を指します。例えば、Bluetooth® 対応のドアロックが10個ほどある建物にゲートウェイを導入することで、BluetoothでつながったドアロックをインターネットやローカルのWi-Fiネットワークにブリッジ接続できるようになります。
  • クラウド:パブリックドメインネットワーク(一般的なインターネット)またはセルラーネットワーク等のプライベートドメインネットワークを指します。

特性

本シリーズ記事における特性を定義しましょう。特性は、IoT システム内のデバイスの動作や、デバイス同士の連携や動作を決定する性質を指します。

IoTシステムでとりわけ重要な特性は、以下の通りです。

通信モデル

通信モデルは、システム内のエンドデバイスからの通信に関する要件を記述したものを指します。本シリーズ記事では、以下の種類の通信モデルを扱います。 

    • Device-to-Device(デバイスからデバイスへ):ネットワーク内のデバイス同士で通信を行います。
    • Device-to-Gateway(デバイスからゲートウェイへ):ネットワーク内のデバイスからシステム内の1つまたは複数のゲートウェイに接続します。
    • Device-to-Cloud(デバイスからクラウドへ):ネットワーク内のデバイスがクラウドベースのバックエンドサーバーと通信します。

通信距離

通信距離は、システム内の2台のデバイス間で信頼性の高い通信が可能な最大距離を指します。

スループット

スループットは、同一システム内のデバイス間の接続でサポートされている最大伝送速度です。スループットの要件は、システム内の箇所によって異なる場合がある点にご注意ください。

モビリティ

モビリティは、デバイスが物理的に固定されているかを表します。

電力

システム内のデバイスの合計消費電力を指します。この特性は、システム内のデバイスごとに異なる場合があります。

環境

環境は、システムの周辺領域における物体やワイヤレス通信におけるノイズによって決まります。環境は、屋外、産業、オフィス、そして自宅の4種類に分類されます。 

コスト

本シリーズ記事では以下の2種類のコストを考慮します。

    • デバイス本体や設置などにかかる一時的なコスト
    • 毎月の接続料金のような定期的にかかるコスト

ワイヤレス技術

本シリーズ記事で焦点を当てるIoT用途では、一般的に以下のワイヤレス技術が検討されています。

  • Bluetooth LE(Low Energy)
  • Wi-Fi
  • IEEE 802.15.4ベースの技術(Thread、Zigbee等)
  • Z-Wave
  • NB-IoT、LTE-M等のセルラー系IoT技術
  • 広域ネットワーク(WAN):LoRaWAN、Sigfox
  • 5G技術
