Description: Wireless controls have recently reached a level of maturity that finally allows for reliable and no-compromise operation in the most demanding professional lighting applications. This is evidenced by last year’s multiple large-scale deployments of Bluetooth mesh lighting control systems. Non-disruptive retrofits, simplified commissioning, and enormous configuration flexibility have finally become a real thing – and the open nature of the Bluetooth mesh standard guarantees that these benefits are available to lighting professionals all around the globe. Having achieved this important milestone, we should now ask ourselves: what’s next?

The answer is data, and it’s not surprising considering that the lighting industry has been chasing the IoT dream for about a decade now. Asset tracking, predictive maintenance, space utilization, indoor navigation – these features have been the talk of the town for quite some time, but we are yet to see them deployed in real-life lighting projects. The lighting control part turned out to be more difficult than expected, but once we’ve finally worked it out, we now have to work out how to monetize the IoT data from connected luminaires and sensors. This task will be much easier if we avoid the issues that prevented the smart lighting dream in the first place. The challenge of interoperability, arguably the biggest single roadblock to widespread adoption of connected lighting, does not revolve solely around connectivity protocols. When it comes to data monetization, barriers also include the lack of standard data formats or common software interfaces.

The Digital Illumination Interface Alliance is addressing these challenges with D4i certification announced last year. D4i brings standardization to intra-luminaire DALI, extending the existing DALI-2 program by specifying power-supply requirements and smart-data capabilities. In practice, D4i drivers are able to store and report a wide range of data in a standardized way, paving the way for industry-wide data management practices. This is another important milestone that gives us the tools we need to turn luminaire data into tangible business value. Eventually, this will allow us to achieve data-driven efficiencies and apply the 3-30-300 rule to workplaces the world over.

The D4i extension is exactly what was needed to unlock the full potential of Bluetooth mesh lighting control systems. With their unmatched data reporting capabilities, Bluetooth mesh components are perfectly suited to comply with D4i requirements and deliver data sets in a standardized and actionable way. In my presentation, I will examine how the Bluetooth mesh standard together with D4i can help us make good use of luminaire data, energy data, and diagnostic data, enabling facility managers to make better decisions and more accurate predictions. I will explain how Bluetooth mesh components interface with new-generation DALI control gear, and what lighting companies should do today to not miss the upcoming IoT data monetization opportunities.
