Platforms for Bluetooth Low Energy Devices

Several Bluetooth SIG member companies offer development kits, controllers, hosts, and other products for developing Bluetooth low energy devices.

Bluetooth Smart devices are designed to gather a specific type of information – are all the windows on my house locked, what is my blood glucose level, how much do I weigh today? – and send it to a Bluetooth Smart Ready device. Examples include heart-rate monitors, blood-glucose meters, smart watches, window and door security sensors, car key fobs, and blood-pressure cuffs – the opportunities are endless.

In most cases, the platform for these sensor-type devices consists of three items:

  • a Bluetooth low energy single mode controller
  • a host subsystem that may execute on the Bluetooth chip or a separate development system
  • an SDK for developing sensor applications

Platforms for Bluetooth Smart Ready devices

Some Bluetooth SIG member companies also offer development kits and other resources for building Bluetooth products.

Bluetooth enabled smart devices are the most effective way to connect to billions of Bluetooth devices in the market today. Examples include phones, tablets, PCs, TVs, even set-top boxes and game consoles that sit at the center of the consumers' connected world. These devices efficiently receive data sent from Bluetooth devices and feed it into applications that turn data into useful information. These are the hub devices of the Bluetooth ecosystem.

In most cases, the platform will consist of three items:

  • A Bluetooth low energy dual-mode controller
  • A host subsystem that may be integrated into the platform operating system or provided as a third party protocol stack
  • An SDK for developing gateway applications
