The Role

The Vice President, Technology reports to the CEO and drives four areas of focus.  First, the VP Technology leads and drives the SIGs advocacy and engagement with spectrum regulatory bodies in the US and around the world, in order to secure appropriate spectrum regulations that permit unimpeded Bluetooth technology usage in existing (2.4 Ghz) and new spectrum.  Second, the VP Technology leads and drives the SIG’s security program, working with member experts to ensure a high level of security in Bluetooth specifications and products. Third, the VP Technology actively develops and manages relationships with other standards development organizations (SDO’s), as well as define and coordinate strategy in areas of common interests.  Fourth, the VP Technology is the technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) of emerging applications for, and capabilities of new Bluetooth technologies, working closely with member groups, internal staff, and the Board of Directors to keep Bluetooth standards at the forefront as a technology of choice.


Roles and Responsibilities

Regulatory program

  • Oversee SIG Regulatory program
  • Chair Regulatory Expert Group
  • Monitor relevant global regulatory activity
  • Facilitate Bluetooth SIG technical inputs to regulatory bodies
  • Drive Bluetooth SIG regulatory projects

Security program

  • Oversee Bluetooth SIG Security program
  • Chair Security and Privacy Response Expert Group
  • Drive Security Expert Group
  • Work with Working Groups to ensure focus on security within Bluetooth specifications
  • Identify opportunities to drive security best practices in Bluetooth end products

Liaisons with other SDOs

  • Establish and maintain connections with relevant SDOs
  • Represent SIG in technical discussions
  • Drive appropriate use of Bluetooth within other relevant standards

SIG technical expert supporting Board of Directors (BoD) and Promotion program

  • BoD – Prepare technical analyses in collaboration with Working Groups/Committees for multi-faceted technical issues presented to BoD
  • Promotion – Support major feature launches and technology campaigns (media, analysts, events,….). Support market development projects (SDO/Association collaborations, partner discussions, events…)
  • Monitor and attend key technical work in the SIG (especially technical committees)

Bluetooth technology roadmap

  • Facilitate New Work Proposal (NWP) process by being a focal point for members to bring technology-related ideas, suggestions, and concerns
  • Maintain Bluetooth major feature roadmap in collaboration with membership, committees, promotion, and BoD

Other staff technical projects

  • Oversee initiatives/activities to improve end product interoperability beyond Qualification program


Skills and Requirements

  • Expert level knowledge and understanding of existing and potential Bluetooth technologies
  • Strong knowledge of and experience in working with wireless security methods and technologies
  • Superior strategic and critical thinking (to identify problem situations and solutions)
  • Strong experience and understanding of technology standards development
  • Experience and skills in working with spectrum regulators
  • Significant experience is establishing and maintaining relationships between 3rd party organizations with competing interests
  • Experience in presenting technical topics to technical expert groups, as well as less technically knowledgeable groups
  • Excellent communication (verbal, written, meeting facilitation and presentation) skills with both internal team members and external business stakeholders (domestic and international)
  • Ability to build consensus and relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • An approachable personality with a strong appreciation for people at all levels in the organization
