Contest Challenges Users to Employ the Many Endless Features of Bluetooth Technology
KIRKLAND, WA – July 20, 2010 – The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) today announced the opening of its Application Developers’ Contest, which will allow users to take advantage of the various features that Bluetooth technology has to offer the wireless space. The contest will promote open source collaboration that will allow users to develop new and improved uses for mobile phones and PCs with the help of Bluetooth wireless technology.
“Many PCs and smart phones have the potential to enhance their wireless features with the use of Bluetooth technology, yet we see these key features being crippled time and time again,” said Michael Foley, Ph.D, executive director of the Bluetooth SIG. “Bluetooth technology has endless possibilities and with the open source nature of this contest, we want to challenge the general public to develop creative and innovative applications that will take advantage of all the amazing things that Bluetooth wireless technology can do.”
The Bluetooth SIG hopes to encourage dedicated and well-versed developers to discover original and innovative applications of Bluetooth technology in devices that the majority of the public use everyday – mobile phones and PCs. Contest finalists will be selected by a panel of industry experts who will judge the applications based on creativity, overall functionality, and user appeal. A total prize package of more than $23,000 will be divided amongst the top finalists. Additional prize support will be provided by Frontline Test Equipment – a year lease to its FTS4BT protocol analyzer.
“The Application Developers’ Contest from the Bluetooth SIG is an innovative way to broaden the use of Bluetooth wireless technology,” said Eric Kaplan, Founder of Frontline Test Equipment, the world’s leading provider of Bluetooth protocol analysis technology. “We are happy to be part of this contest and supply the winners with the testing equipment they need to bring their proposed applications to life.”
The Application Developers’ Contest will remain open for the next six months. Interested application developers are asked to request further information directly from the Bluetooth SIG Web site, to receive detailed information on the submission process and specific contest rules.
About Bluetooth® Wireless Technology
Bluetooth wireless technology is the global short-range wireless standard for personal connectivity of a broad range of electronic devices. The technology continues to evolve, building on its inherent strengths – small-form factor radio, low power, low cost, built-in security, robustness, ease-of-use, and ad hoc networking abilities. This evolution now provides manufacturers and consumers with three options for connecting wirelessly – Classic Bluetooth technology for use in a wide range of consumer electronics; Bluetooth high speed technology for the transfer of video, music and photos between phones, cameras, camcorders, PCs and TVs; and Bluetooth low energy technology for low power sensor devices and new web services within the healthcare, fitness, security, home entertainment, automotive and automation industries. More than eight new Bluetooth enabled products are qualified every working day and more than 19 million Bluetooth units are shipping per week. There are nearly three billion Bluetooth devices in the marketplace and that number climbs daily, making it the only proven wireless choice for developers, product manufacturers, and consumers worldwide.
