Seven Summits: Working Conditions

What about the working conditions of all this equipment?

People working with wired devices can encounter problems when temperature changes rapidly. With Bluetooth technology, taking equipment from hot to cold temperature was never a problem: the devices could be used in conditions down to -20°C and in strong winds. Different Bluetooth connections were tested with the satellite phone camera, digital camera and the laptop: they all worked perfectly. The impact of strong direct light and heat from the sun in the whiteness of the Himalayas was not a problem either.

The Motorola/Audex Bluetooth jacket was tested under temperatures of -32°C, between 5400m up to 6400m high, in very windy conditions. The Anoto digital pen proved to function well and efficiently up to 8000m high. The Canon photo printer was used at 6400m. To compare: most technical gadgets have trouble working on altitudes above 5000m because of low air pressure. Even in a cold weather, -35°C, the Canon showed no loss in colors or ink. The only noticeable difference was that from -20°C, when the printer appeared to be a bit slow. In the tent, temperatures varied between -35°C and +55°C, but the change did not affect the printing.
