Seven Summits: Using Bluetooth Technology

Bluetooth wireless technology proved to be highly valuable for Johan in order to keep in touch with civilization. For example, with the help of Anoto’s digital pen, Johan could easily write and send reports via Bluetooth technology to websites and media all over the world.

The Bluetooth satellite phone from Thuraya provided Johan with a direct voice connection in such a way that it made it even possible to make conference calls with expedition partners. Johan even dialed in from Mt. Everest to the Bluetooth SIG All Hands Meeting in Vienna.

The phone was also connected to the Motorola/Audex Bluetooth jacket, enabling Johan to listen to music in very windy conditions via the integrated headphones in the hood. Furthermore, he connected the satellite phone to other devices: the Motorola/Oakley O-ROKR sunglasses in clear conditions, or in more gloomy weather, with a Jabra Bluetooth headset. The radio set included in the Bluetooth O-ROKR sunglasses gave the climbers direct access to weather reports while climbing up to 7,000 meters.

During the course of the expedition, Johan saw how Bluetooth technology was even helpful in his social undertakings: Using the wireless Canon photo printer, he could print out pictures on the spot. Some of the sherpas saw themselves on a picture for the first time and were delighted with the small souvenir!
