Brand FAQ

Below are several frequently asked questions about using the Bluetooth word mark and logos.  If you do not find your answer below, please contact Brand Manager.

Can I register a website called “www.bluetoothphones.com” or www.bluetooth.se?
No. The Bluetooth word mark in a trademark is owned by the Bluetooth SIG. The word mark is not to be used in a domain name or as a URL. The only exceptions to the rule are for the domain names owned by Bluetooth SIG, Inc. (Bluetooth.com and Bluetooth.org). An appropriate use of the Bluetooth word mark in a URL would be www.companyname.com/bluetooth.

Can anyone use the Bluetooth word mark and logos?
The Bluetooth word mark and logos are owned by the Bluetooth SIG and licensed out for use. Anyone wanting to use the trademark for commercial purposes must be licensed to use it. To become licensed, you need to register for membership with the Bluetooth SIG. Adopter membership is a free level of membership, but requires you to agree to the Bluetooth Trademark Licensing Agreement, thus allowing you to use the marks for commercial purposes.

When using the Bluetooth trademarks, should I use the “TM” or “®”?
The Bluetooth SIG has aggressively pursued the registration of the Bluetooth trademarks on a worldwide basis. As such, the Bluetooth marks are now registered to the degree that they can now be accompanied by the registered trademark symbol “®” by licensees on a worldwide basis.

I am working on a presentation on Bluetooth technology for my class, can I use the Bluetooth trademarks?
Yes. If you are working on a paper or presentation that will be used internally only, you may obtain the Bluetooth marks. In order to do so, please visit Logo Requests.

I am an online reseller of Bluetooth products, can I use the Bluetooth trademarks on my website or in any collateral I may send out?
It depends on your planned usage. As a reseller, you are able to use the Bluetooth trademarks if used in direct relation to the member company’s products. However, if you plan to use the logos in relation to your own brand name, you will need to become licensed to do so.

For example, if you use the logos as such – “Reseller Company sells Motorola Bluetooth products” – you can use the logos on behalf of the member company. However, if you plan to use the Bluetooth logos as such – “Reseller Company, your resource for Bluetooth headsets” – you will need to become licensed to do so.

Adopter membership is a free level of membership within the Bluetooth SIG. By becoming an adopter member, you become licensed to use the Bluetooth marks for commercial purposes. You can register for membership at www.bluetooth.org.

I am buying products from another company and re-branding them as my own. Can I use the Bluetooth trademarks without license?
No. Even though you may not be manufacturing a product, if you plan to use the Bluetooth marks in relation to a qualified product that you re-brand as your own, you must be a member of the Bluetooth SIG and licensed to use the marks. By becoming licensed, you will be able to use the marks in relation to the product you re-brand.
