Newly Appointed Bluetooth SIG Marketing Director of Asia Pacific Foresees Strong Growth of Innovative Bluetooth Products and Applications Hong Kong – October 6, 2006 – The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has appointed Linda Ho as the new marketing director for Asia Pacific and Japan. Based at the Bluetooth SIG office in Hong Kong, Ho is responsible for strategically planning and executing marketing programs designed to promote Bluetooth wireless technology. She also works closely with Bluetooth SIG members to promote technology development and adoption throughout Asia Pacific and Japan, a region that has become a hotbed of wireless technology development and usage.
“Asia Pacific is a key region for the development and manufacturing of Bluetooth products and boasts a high concentration of technology savvy consumers keen to take advantage of the growing number of Bluetooth applications and the convenience and freedom they provide. More than half the world’s number of Bluetooth SIG Associate and Promoter Members are based in this part of the world, solidifying the growing influence and importance that Asia Pacific has on the development of Bluetooth technology,” said Ho. “The Bluetooth SIG works closely with members to cultivate product innovation in the region, particularly on the development of high-speed Bluetooth technology and the exciting new products and applications that will be available in the coming years.”
Bluetooth SIG members in the region manufacture some of the most innovative Bluetooth products in the world. To ensure the future of innovative product development in Asia Pacific, one of Ho’s key objectives in her new role is to ramp up Bluetooth Qualification and Trademark enforcement programs, with the goal of educating members and non-members on the benefits of protecting and respecting the usage of trademarks. Over 50 percent of Bluetooth products qualified in the region and many of the top qualifying Bluetooth Qualification Bodies, which provide services to members seeking Bluetooth product qualification, are based in Asia Pacific and Japan. Ho will work with government organizations throughout the region to raise awareness of the importance of protecting the Bluetooth trademark, and clamp down on the manufacturing of unauthorized Bluetooth products that infringe on the trademark.
On the consumer awareness front, a Millward Brown study on the attitude and usage of Bluetooth technology found that Taiwan and Japan were among the leading countries in naming Bluetooth technology as the best recognized wireless technology. Sixty-seven percent of Taiwanese and Japanese respondents know which wireless technology brand to look for when connecting devices in the personal area network. Over two-thirds of Taiwan consumers own at least one Bluetooth enabled device, and Japanese consumers are the most willing to pay extra for Bluetooth functionality.
Said Michael Foley, Ph. D., executive director of the Bluetooth SIG: “These two countries, along with China and Korea, boast the highest number of Bluetooth SIG members in the region and are among the most advanced in the world when it comes to manufacturing Bluetooth products. We are delighted that Linda has joined the Bluetooth SIG and look forward to working together to take Bluetooth technology development and usage in the Asia Pacific and Japan regions to scale even greater heights.”
About Bluetooth® Wireless Technology Bluetooth wireless technology is the global short-range wireless standard for personal connectivity of a broad range of electronic devices. The technology is now available in its fourth version of the core specification and continues to develop, building on its inherent strengths – small-form factor radio, low power, low cost, built-in security, robustness, ease-of-use, and ad hoc networking abilities. Three new Bluetooth enabled products are qualified every day and 10 million Bluetooth units are shipping per week. The installed base of Bluetooth devices was over 500 million products at the end of 2005 and is projected to surpass one billion by the end of 2006, making it the only proven choice for developers, product manufacturers, and consumers worldwide.
